David Edmondson

Dave is the owner and Chief instructor of Top Run Motorcycle Training.

He started riding at the age of 16, having got hold of a Honda SS50 sports moped as transport for work.

Since then he has owned or ridden just about every type of bike on the road. He currently rides a Honda ST1100 Pan European, covering upwards of 80k miles a year.

His interest in training came about when he saw a feature about motorcycle training on a TV programme.

He contacted his local RAC/ACU centre and started as a trainee instructor.

Progressing through the ranks, he qualified as an examiner at the ripe old age of 21, one of the youngest in the country, and covering the North of England.

When the RAC/ACU was disbanded, he continued instructing and examining with local authority road safety units. He spent most of his time teaching instructors and assesing them to make sure they maintained and kept to DSA standards.

Passing the Advanced Motorcycle test with the Institute of Advanced Motorists in 1979 sent him in a new and exciting direction. As an observer for the I.A.M., many thousands of miles were covered training full licence holders to advanced level.

When regulations covering bike training changed in 1990, he updated his skills by attending the DSA establishment at Cardington, Bedford, to become a supervisory and Direct Access instructor.

More recently, Dave passed the RoSPA Advanced Motorcycle test at Gold level, the highest award that a civilian rider can achieve.

Dave is also an assessors for NVQ D32 D33 and BTEC in advanced instruction. His qualifications are rounded off with a City & Guilds certificate in adult teaching; Plans for the future are the RoSPA Diploma in Advanced Motorcycle Instruction and examiner status for the Diamond Advanced Driving Test.

In 2007 Dave qualified as an Emergency Medical Technician. As well as being able to give life saving aid in the event of coming across an accident, it also lets him instruct on the First Bike on Scene courses that are proving very popular.
