If you are over 21 years old, you have the option of taking Direct Access.

Your lessons and test will be on a 500cc bike with a power output over 46.6bhp, much closer to the sort of bike you probably want to ride.

After passing your test, you will be able to ride any “cc” and any power output bike.

We don’t have fixed length courses; each one is tailored to the individual. Before you book we would undertake an assessment of your bike control skills.

This assessment is FREE, it lets us see what your riding is like, we will then advise you how many days you need and how to best structure your course.

Module 1, control skills test, and Module 2 on-road pursuit test, are taken at the end of your course.

Direct Access

For your safety and to give you more instructional time, we limit all courses to maximum of 2 riders per instructor. You will be in radio contact at all times, with the instructor giving encouragement and guidance. The cost of the course is……

DSA Module 1 test

DSA Module 2 test

Module 1 on an off road area,is to check your control skills. It includes a manual handling test, to check you can move your bike safely, a slalom, figure 8, and slow ride as if in traffic, showing slow speed control, one of the most important aspects of riding.

You then do 3 high speed manoeuvres at 50 kph (32 mph), consisting of a controlled break as if stopping at a junction, an emergency stop and an avoidance manoeuvre that replicates having to change direction quickly as if a car had pulled out on you.

The Internet if full of horror stories about the module 1 test, with riders crashing and being badly injured. Yes they are true, BUT there is a common reason for all of them – a lack of training and practice. You need time on the bike to get to know how it handles, accelerates and breaks. It’s just not sensible to attempt module 1 with only a few hours riding around a car park.

Module 2 is where you get the chance to show the examiner your riding skills on the road. You will ride through a variety of road and traffic conditions from slow town riding to flowing bends on open county lanes at national speed limits

The examiner will follow you, normally on another motorbike, giving directions along the way. Part of the ride is a free-drive; this is where you will be asked to follow signs to a destination, just as you will have to when riding on your own, following signs and road markings and making sure it’s safe before changing lanes.

All the examiner wants to see is a good safe ride, they are all bikers themselves and want you to pass, no tricks, and no quotas they just want you to be safe.

Have a look at the official DSA videos on this page, they show what’s involved in both tests.
